  • Fox's release bills it as the platform's first full-length, multi-episode production to rely entirely on AI-generated imagery, but human actors played the characters and humans wrote the scripts.

Fox Nation premiered its three-part series Houdini: Back from the Dead on October 14, billed in the platform's own release as its first full-length, multi-episode production to rely entirely on AI-generated imagery. Read that release closely and the claim narrows to the imagery alone.

Watch the official trailer below.

The series, produced by Red Rock Films, was made using more than 400 licensed photographs and archival footage, which served as source imagery for a team of AI artists. Human actors played the principal characters, among them Houdini's wife Bess, his mother, his brother and his friends. Fox's release says the actors portrayed those characters "to capture authentic movement, cadence, and performance." Variety reports that the actors served as stand-ins while the production team used AI to transform their appearances into the historical figures.

The acting is human, and so are the scripts. Fox's release says the scripts were written entirely by humans, drawn from diaries, books, correspondence and historical writings, with all historical claims supported by archival research and expert review. Variety adds that the characters' voices are a mix of human and AI-generated voices.

The Generated, which covers AI in media, read the same release and reached a plainer description: AI-altered performances built on a licensed archive. It reports that The Hollywood Reporter describes the method as an AI-assisted form of motion capture, with re-enactments and other visuals generated, and that Red Rock argues the process is less expensive and more efficient than the CGI traditionally used for motion capture. The AI tools themselves are unnamed.

The "entirely AI" bill covers the imagery: the faces, the recreated figures and the archive brought into motion. People made the performance capture, the scripts and the research.

Fox Nation president Lauren Petterson framed it in the release as "breaking new creative ground by using emerging technology to bring one of history's most fascinating figures to life for a modern audience," and said the series stays truthful to the history, quoting the release's own phrase, "remaining rooted in extensive research and historical accuracy."

The "first" is Fox Nation's own. The Generated notes that Sky HISTORY in the UK aired Killer Kings, a six-part series its producers called "the first documentary TV series to air using fully AI-generated imagery," from June 2025, with its AI tools named at the time. Fox did not claim a wider first.

Across three episodes, per the release, the series traces Houdini's childhood shooting accident, his relationship with his mother, a staged rivalry with his brother, his turn to aviation, his near-fatal grave escape, his marriage to Bess and his campaign against fraudulent spiritualist mediums.
