The National Walkout to Freeze AI is happening today, Tuesday, October 20, with events registered at universities, high schools, city centers and data centers across the United States, organized by the advocacy group Irreplaceable.

The campaign page is headlined "FREEZE AI NOW!" and states the group's aim in its own words: "It's time for the people to determine the future of AI, not big tech CEOs." Its demand is a halt on frontier development. "Until people have a real say, a real stake, and real safety guardrails in place, this technology must not advance," the page reads.

Irreplaceable frames the walkout around costs beyond catastrophic risk. "They are already stealing our work, destroying jobs, wrecking our climate, and surveilling our communities, and they are racing ahead anyway, betting that we stay quiet," the campaign page says. Its closing line is a refusal: "We will not give up our careers, our backyards, our privacy, or our lives for the sake of AI profit."

Irreplaceable launched in late August 2026 and is led by executive director Phil Aroneanu, a co-founder of the climate group 350.org, according to TechRound. The group says its partners include Women's March, Sunrise Movement, Public Citizen and National Nurses United, and it models its strategy on the 1982 nuclear freeze movement, pointing to a Central Park rally that it says drew a million people.

Local times come from the Mobilize listings Irreplaceable uses to register events. The New York City citywide walkout runs 5 to 6pm EDT outside OpenAI's office at 295 Lafayette Street in SoHo, billed as the day's closer. Boston organizers gather at 1pm EDT outside the Massachusetts State House, Howard University's walkout is at 12:30pm EDT in Washington, DC, the University of Virginia's is at 2:30pm EDT, and a San Francisco school walkout rallies at 11:30am PDT at OpenAI's 550 Terry A Francois Boulevard office. The campaign page also lists events at Johns Hopkins, MIT, the University of Michigan, Brown, Rutgers and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

KTLA's Weekend Morning News aired a segment on October 18 with Irreplaceable state organizer Jeremy Ornstein ahead of the walkout. In Boston, one of the lead organizers is Ari Rosenthal, co-founder of the Massachusetts AI Action Network, who told GBH News that a former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher's public resignation was one catalyst for the day. "It is a black box," Rosenthal said of the technology. "We do not know how to safely develop these technologies where we know exactly how it will act."

No AI company has publicly commented on the walkout. The campaign names no company in its demand, pointing instead at "big tech CEOs" generally, though two of the gatherings on the schedule sit outside OpenAI offices in New York and San Francisco.

For creators working with AI video, the walkout changes nothing about what ships this week, and the campaign offers no policy text yet. It is a read on the political weather the tools are launching into. Irreplaceable's own five-year road map runs from building a base in 2026 to a unified federal agenda in 2027, making AI a voting issue in 2028, and pushing for binding regulation by January 1, 2030. If the group turns today's turnout into the coalition it describes, the compliance questions that arrive at AI video platforms get louder, not quieter. That is a conditional, and the campaign page still lists many locations as "details coming soon."
