Instagram puts an AI video assistant inside its Edits app
The assistant reads a creator's retention, likes, shares and comments and names what to change, and extra usage comes with a Meta One subscription.

Key takeaways
- Instagram announced on September 30, 2026 that its Edits app has an AI assistant that reads a creator's Instagram metrics, including follows, views, video retention, likes and shares, alongside comments and trends.
- Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app, said the assistant handles analysis rather than creative work: Edits assistant does the digging for you, the creative calls are still yours.
- Creators can unlock more of the assistant with a Meta One subscription, and Meta previewed the tool in June 2026 at an invite-only creator event.
- YouTube said on September 23, 2026 that it is building a conversational editing tool aimed at the edit itself, which it expects to release early next year.
Instagram said on September 30, 2026 that its Edits app now carries a conversational AI assistant that reads a creator's own performance data and points out what to change, rather than handing over generic advice.
TechCrunch reported the rollout on Wednesday. The assistant works on the metrics a creator already has on Instagram. "The assistant knows your account's Instagram metrics, things like follows, views, video retention, likes, shares and combines them with your comments, what's trending on Instagram and what your audience is into," Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app, told TechCrunch. "It can spot patterns in your performance over time and surface actionable insights that are hard to see from the metrics alone."
Westervelt said the tool was built with a group of creators, and described the line Meta decided not to cross. "One thing we heard consistently: creators want a tool that handles the analysis, not one that does the creative work for them," he said. "Edits assistant does the digging for you. The creative calls are still yours."
There is a usage limit. TechCrunch reports creators can unlock more of the assistant with a Meta One subscription, the paid tier Meta launched across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp in May 2026. Meta first showed the assistant in June at an invite-only creator event, where it also said a desktop version of Edits was in the works.
Edits is the free mobile editor Meta launched in April 2025 to compete with CapCut, and it has added tools at a steady clip since, including keyframes and an in-app AI clip generator that takes a text prompt, a picture or a video as input. The assistant is the part of it built around reading the creator's numbers back to them.
The competitive read is the interesting part. YouTube said on September 23 that it is working on a conversational editing tool, which it says will arrive early next year; TechCrunch notes YouTube's framing points at the edit itself, while Meta's points at analytics. Both are answers to the same complaint, that the work of diagnosing why a video underperformed falls on the person who made it.
For a creator, the assistant changes one step: the review after posting, which currently means opening Insights and guessing at causes. What it does not do, on Meta's own description, is cut, generate or restyle anything, and how much of it a creator gets before hitting the limit is not published.
The Edits assistant is rolling out to creators on Instagram's Edits app; extra usage comes with a Meta One subscription.
