OpenAI hires Patreon's Sam Yam to lead a creator division

OpenAI has hired Patreon co-founder Sam Yam to lead a new Creator Product division, with two of Patreon's former product and engineering leads joining him, Yam said on September 22 in a post on X reported by The Verge.

Yam spent more than 13 years at Patreon, which he co-founded and where he was president and chief technology officer. Drew Rowny, Patreon's former head of product, and Shannon Ma, its former head of engineering, join him at OpenAI; both stepped down from Patreon in recent weeks, according to The Verge.

"We're going to build together with Creators at OpenAI and share early access to a new set of tools that I think will be critically valuable to Creators and their communities," Yam wrote. He added: "Pay attention to OpenAI DevDay next week!" Yam also posted follow-ups saying he believes "human creativity is paramount," Music Ally reported, a line that reads as an answer to the reception the move might get.

DevDay is scheduled for September 29, and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has teased a further announcement this week, per The Verge. Neither OpenAI nor Yam has said what the creator tools are, and The Decoder reports the division is being built now that OpenAI's models generate text, images, audio and video.

The hires land in a strained relationship between AI companies and the people who make a living from creative work. OpenAI is running down its video products as it builds them: the Sora app and website closed on April 26, 2026 and the Sora API shuts down on September 24, per OpenAI's help centre.

Patreon's own business is the reference point OpenAI is buying: a subscription platform that 13 years of creators built livelihoods on, rather than a studio that produces content itself. Adding a creator division gives OpenAI a buyer-facing channel for tools it can already demonstrate; it does not yet give it a product creators have asked for.

OpenAI DevDay is scheduled for September 29, the date Yam points to for the new tools.
