Viral Talarico clip is a deepfake, fact checkers say

Researchers attribute the fabricated video to Storm-1516, a Russia-aligned network, and the former student whose face it used says it is not him.

Key takeaways

  • Fact-checkers and analysts say two videos posted to X on October 20, 2026, accusing Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico of sexual assault are AI-generated fakes.
  • Lead Stories ran both clips through Hive Moderation and got ratings of 99.1 percent and 99.8 percent likely AI-generated; NewsGuard's Reality Check separately cited a 98 percent deepfake likelihood.
  • Graphika assesses with high confidence that the Russia-aligned influence operation Storm-1516 produced the videos.
  • Talarico taught sixth-grade English and language arts at Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio from 2011 to 2013, according to the Texas Tribune.

Two videos that surfaced on X on October 20, 2026, accusing Texas Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico of sexually assaulting a former student are fake. Fact-checkers and independent researchers who examined the clips say they are AI-generated, and the former student of Talarico's whose face and name the videos used told a fact-checker the footage is not him.

For AI video creators, the episode is a working sample of the technology in both directions: a two-clip deepfake convincing enough to fool some of the largest AI chatbots, and detection tools that flagged it within a day.

Lead Stories published a fact-check on October 21, 2026. The man whose likeness the clips used told Lead Stories in an October 21 phone interview that he had seen the video. "I've looked at it, and it's not me," he said. "The video is very much AI, very bad AI."

The detection numbers agree. Lead Stories ran each clip through Hive Moderation's AI-generated content detector, which rated them 99.1 percent and 99.8 percent likely to be AI-generated. NewsGuard's Reality Check, in a separate October 21 report, cited a Hive detection score of 98 percent likelihood that the clips were a deepfake. Lead Stories described unnatural lip and facial movement, a body and background that stay unusually still, and a synthetic, monotone voice; NewsGuard cited unnatural eye movements and blinking and a stagnant facial expression.

NewsGuard also traced the operation. It reported that the X account behind the post was created in September 2026 with Romania as its signup country, a pattern it said matches Storm-1516, a Russia-aligned influence campaign that pushes AI deepfakes about Western politicians. Graphika assessed with high confidence on October 21 that Storm-1516 produced the videos, and it named known network amplifiers that shared them.

The network has used a fabricated sexual-abuse claim against a Democratic politician with a teaching background before. NewsGuard noted a similar false claim in October 2024 about Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Talarico's campaign rejected the claim. Spokesperson Kate Poltrack told NewsGuard in an emailed statement that it is "totally baseless and false." Lead Stories said it reached out to the campaign and did not receive an immediate response.

Talarico taught sixth-grade English and language arts at Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio from 2011 to 2013, according to the Texas Tribune. The fabricated clip places the invented assault at that school in 2012.

The larger fight is over AI in campaign advertising. The Washington Post reported on October 24, 2026, that Democrats are betting the GOP's AI-generated ads on Talarico and other candidates will backfire.

Both clips were tested with Hive Moderation's AI-generated content detector, the tool Lead Stories used to reach its 99.1 percent and 99.8 percent figures.
