Adobe's Premiere 26.5 Puts Firefly, Veo, Kling, Runway & Luma Video Generation Inside the Timeline

Adobe's Premiere 26.5 adds a Generative Media Tool that fills timeline gaps with video and audio from Firefly or partner models.

Adobe announced the Generative Media Tool in a blog post on September 8, 2026, ahead of the IBC 2026 trade show. No Film School reports Adobe is showing the updates on the IBC floor. The Premiere 26.5 release notes, posted on Adobe's community site on September 10, list the tool as part of that version.

Per Adobe, an editor selects Generative Media, defines where the result should appear and describes what is needed. Premiere returns an editable clip in the sequence that can be refined without leaving the project. The release notes give "a 3-second transition" and ambient forest sounds as example requests.

The model menu is the headline feature. Adobe says editors can choose Adobe Firefly or partner models including Google Veo, Kling, Runway and Luma. Adobe's post does not give version numbers for any of them.

The Generative Media Tool holds four generators. Generate Video fills timeline gaps and samples reference frames from the project so the new footage better matches the surrounding edit. Generate Sound Effects runs on Adobe's own audio model and lets editors use their voice to guide rhythm, timing and intensity. Generate Soundscape, in beta, analyzes up to 15 seconds of video and builds layered ambience timed to the cut. Generate Music, also in beta, offers multiple variations with tempo and looping controls, and Adobe says the music carries synchronization rights for any media.

Premiere's earlier generative feature was much narrower. Generative Extend, which lengthens a clip with generated frames, entered beta on October 14, 2024 limited to 1920x1080 or 1280x720 footage at 16:9. It reached general release with 4K support on April 2, 2025. In Premiere 26.5, Generative Extend supports resolutions from 360p to 4K UHD at any aspect ratio, plus interlaced and non-square-pixel footage.

After Effects gets an AI Assistant in public beta. Adobe says the AI Assistant works across a whole project rather than one composition, and can reorganize large projects and write expressions from plain-language requests.

Now, one caveat: neither Adobe page says what a generation costs. Digital Production, covering the tool's Premiere beta on July 13 and citing Adobe's help pages, reported that generating media consumes credits that vary by model and settings, and that available models depend on region and plan.

Runway users have a second route: Runway's own plugin for Premiere and After Effects launched the same day.

If the per-model costs prove reasonable, the Generative Media Tool could make a missing cutaway a prompt rather than a stock search, with the model chosen per shot.

The Generative Media Tool ships in Premiere 26.5, which installs from the Creative Cloud desktop app. In the release-notes thread, a community expert on Adobe's forum said updates are released in staggered availability, so the version may not appear for every account at once.
