Key takeaways

  • ByteDance's Jimeng launched Short Drama Studio on October 26, 2026, putting script, character, storyboard, video and post-production tools into one workspace.
  • The studio runs on three in-house models: DreamScript for scripts, Anycook for images, and DreamShot for storyboards.
  • DreamScript can parse novels of up to 100,000 Chinese characters and generate up to 100 consecutive episodes, per BlockBeats.
  • A remake tool regenerates a finished short drama's visuals for a different region, art style or aspect ratio while keeping the original pacing and camera language.

ByteDance's Short Drama Studio, the short-drama workspace inside its Jimeng app, carries a vertical serial from script to finished episodes in one place, and it is the company's bet that the format can be run like a factory. SLOP TV News reported the October 26, 2026 launch and the Xiaoyunque merger that supplied part of its tooling, and published a guide to running the same pipeline with tools a creator outside China can open today. This explainer takes the studio apart: what each stage does, why the asset library matters more than the models, what the free trials include, and the size of the market behind it.

TechNode reported the launch as bringing script, character, scene, storyboard, video and post-production stages into one workflow. Jimeng is ByteDance's AI image and video creation platform, introduced under that name in May 2024 and part of Jianying, the ByteDance video-editing business known overseas as CapCut, per Momenta Media. Yicai Global's flash described the same launch as the work of Dreamina, the name the platform carries overseas.

The draw is what the studio keeps: the parts of a series that used to be rebuilt from scratch. Characters, costumes and scenes the script introduces are filed into a shared asset library and reused across later episodes, and a finished short drama can be pushed through a remake tool that re-renders its visuals for a different market. BlockBeats and Momenta Media both single out the remake tool; BlockBeats also describes the reusable asset library. TechNode framed the launch as extending Jimeng's tools past individual image or video generation into coordinated short-drama production.

What Is Jimeng's Short Drama Studio?

It is software, not a production house. Jimeng describes it as a one-stop AI tool for short-drama creation that folds script organization, character and scene management, storyboard generation, video production and post-production into one platform, so a creator does not switch between apps, Sina Tech reported. The short dramas it targets are the vertical, minutes-long serials that have become one of China's most-watched online formats, per Momenta Media.

The scope is broad on paper. DreamScript writes and adapts scripts, DreamShot turns them into storyboards, and the editing layer handles reshoots, re-voicing and shot splitting. Jimeng says the aim is to let different kinds of creators finish the run from first idea to finished cut inside one tool set, according to Sina Tech.

The Three Models Behind It

Jimeng built the studio on three in-house models. DreamScript handles scripts, Anycook generates images, and DreamShot builds storyboards, per TechNode and Yicai Global.

DreamScript goes past drafting. BlockBeats reports it can parse a novel of up to 100,000 Chinese characters and generate up to 100 consecutive episodes, and that it checks plot conflicts and character settings as it works. Momenta Media, which also reports the 100,000-character limit, describes the model as writing and adapting scripts; TechNode adds that it handles scripts for overseas audiences.

Anycook is tuned for short-drama art. Jimeng's launch post says it generates more realistic, higher-recognition short-drama characters and builds scene sets across a range of visual styles. DreamShot supplies a 3D "director's desk" where a creator sets camera positions and movements and previews the shot before committing to it, per BlockBeats and Momenta Media.

What the Asset Library Changes

The asset library is where the studio parts company with one-shot generators. Characters, costumes and scenes pulled from the script are organized automatically and stored for reuse, so episode four can draw on the same character asset episode one created, per BlockBeats. Jimeng calls the cross-tool link asset interoperability: a change in one place propagates through the chain, its launch post says.

Reshoots are scoped to a single shot. If one frame fails, a creator regenerates that shot instead of the whole scene, and the audio tools separate dialogue from background sound so a line can be re-voiced on its own, per BlockBeats and Momenta Media. Automatic shot splitting breaks finished footage into editable pieces, per Jimeng's launch post, which Momenta Media also describes as splitting footage into shots automatically.

How the Remake Tool Works

The remake tool is the studio's most unusual feature and the one aimed at going abroad. A creator uploads a finished short drama, and the system identifies its characters, scenes, props and shot structure. It then regenerates the visuals for a chosen art style, aspect ratio and target region, keeping the original's pacing and camera language as closely as it can, per BlockBeats and Momenta Media.

For a production house, that is a way to re-shoot a series for a foreign audience without casting or building sets again. Chinese-owned apps such as ReelShort and DramaBox already release series abroad, including versions re-shot with local actors, and the remake option targets that kind of adaptation, per Momenta Media. Momenta Media notes it has not tested the remake tool or verified its output quality.

Where It Came From

Jimeng did not build all of this from nothing. Parts of the studio come from Xiaoyunque, another Jianying product, which introduced a short-drama agent in March 2026, per Momenta Media and BlockBeats. On October 24, 36Kr reported that Xiaoyunque had been merged into Jimeng but keeps an independent entry point, according to BlockBeats. The consolidation puts the short-drama tooling onto ByteDance's main AI creation platform.

What It Means for Creators

If the asset library works as described, the studio's value is repetition. A creator who builds a character once could carry that asset across a whole season instead of rebuilding it episode by episode, and the remake tool could make a finished series reusable in a second market without a second shoot. That matters most to teams already producing vertical serials at volume. For a creator outside China, access is the open question: Jimeng has not said whether the remake tool will reach ByteDance's overseas apps, per Momenta Media.

What It Costs and What Is Still Unclear

The launch post offers limited free trials rather than a full price list: free script writing and script analysis once each, plus a free 15-second smart preview and a 15-second remake test, per Jimeng's announcement as relayed by Sina. A standard price schedule is not set out, Momenta Media reports.

The market figure behind the launch is a researcher's estimate, not audited revenue: iiMedia put China's micro-drama market at 67.8 billion yuan in 2025, about $9.4 billion at roughly 7.2 yuan to the dollar, up 34.4%, as cited by Momenta Media.
