Pocket Entertainment, the parent of audio drama platform Pocket FM, said on September 10 that its revenue run rate doubled to $500 million in a year, with AI producing 99% of its new content, as the company reportedly seeks $100 million to $120 million at a valuation of up to $2 billion.

Chief executive Rohan Nayak told TechCrunch that AI now powers 93% of Pocket FM's catalog, up from a standing start two years ago, and that the technology has made content production about 80 times cheaper. Work that used to take a year - 100 hours of audio - is now done in a day, he said. The company's more than 550,000 creators produce about 2.5 million hours of AI-assisted content a year, against a catalog of roughly 100,000 hours two years ago, and the library now holds more than 770,000 audio series.

The retention figures moved with the volume. Nayak said Pocket FM's 12-month revenue retention rate has climbed to 76% from 44%, and that AI is used to identify which passages hold listeners. Vasu Sharma, the company's head of AI and a former Meta and Tesla scientist, told TechCrunch that Pocket FM has trained its own models for creative writing and text-to-speech on production data and listener-engagement signals rather than licensing them.

The funding talks are the part the company will not discuss. Mint reported that Pocket FM had revived plans to raise $100 million to $120 million at a valuation of $1.5 billion to $2 billion, citing two people familiar with the matter, after an earlier attempt failed to close amid investor concerns about backing a loss-making business. A Pocket FM spokesperson said the company does not comment on market speculation, fundraising discussions or specific financial details. TechCrunch repeated the reported target on September 10 and said Nayak did not deny the talks, adding that any new round would go primarily toward AI and new entertainment formats.

For scale, the company was last valued at about $750 million when it raised a $103 million Series D in March 2024, and has raised roughly $196.5 million in total, with Lightspeed, StepStone, Tencent, Naver, Times Internet and Goodwater among its investors. Mint reported FY25 revenue of ₹1,768 crore against ₹1,051.97 crore a year earlier, with losses narrowing to ₹165 crore from ₹208 crore.

The product news that followed on September 18 is the same story with a user interface. Pocket FM launched Sherpa by Pocket FM, a free beta tool that plans a story across arcs and episodes, drafts and reviews scenes, keeps characters and events in a long-term memory layer the company calls the Narrative World Model, then narrates the draft and publishes it straight to Pocket FM. The launch release said annualized content production has grown 75-fold to more than 2.5 million hours alongside a 10-fold increase in titles crossing blockbuster thresholds. "We believe the next breakthrough in generative AI for entertainment isn't simply going to come from models that can write better sentences," co-founder Prateek Dixit said in the release. "It will come from systems that understand stories."

Pocket Entertainment is also testing whether the model travels. Its three-month-old microdrama app, Pocket Saga, has reached an annualized revenue run rate of about $15 million, Nayak told TechCrunch, about 3% of the parent's total. For creators, the arithmetic cuts both ways: cheaper production and a platform that pays on performance widen the door, but a catalog that grows 75-fold a year is also a catalog competing with itself for the same listeners.

Next catalyst: whether the reported round prices at the top or the bottom of that $1.5 billion to $2 billion range. Nayak told TechCrunch that Pocket Entertainment does not plan to list publicly within the next 24 months, and is keeping its options open for India or the United States.
