Stability AI Raises $76 Million From All 3 Major Music Groups & Electronic Arts, Reaching $232 Million Total

Stability AI, the maker of the Stable Diffusion image model, said on August 25, 2026 that it had raised $76 million in a Series B round joined by Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group and Electronic Arts, bringing total funding under CEO Prem Akkaraju to $232 million.

The announcement is 25 days old as of September 19. It is covered here for what it could mean for video: the three major music groups and gaming company Electronic Arts now own equity in a company whose models span audio, image and video.

According to Stability AI's announcement, the new investors are Electronic Arts, Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures. Coatue, Greycroft, Kadmos Capital, former Facebook president Sean Parker and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt invested again. The announcement names no lead investor and gives no valuation, and neither do reports from TechCrunch, Variety or Music Business Worldwide.

Stability AI said the $232 million total covers two equity rounds and convertible notes raised since Akkaraju, a former CEO of visual effects company Weta Digital, was appointed in June 2024. That implies $156 million raised under him before this round ($232 million minus $76 million).

Akkaraju said in the announcement that Stability AI stands apart in the field because its staff are "creative people making tools for creatives."

The company said the money will go toward its product suite for creative production, its applied research and an expanded professional services arm. TechCrunch described Stability AI's current lineup as models for music, video and image generation.

Most of the strategic investors were already partners. Stability AI's news page dates its Electronic Arts partnership to October 23, 2025, its Universal Music Group alliance to October 30, 2025 and its Warner Music Group partnership to November 19, 2025. Variety reported that those deals involve building models on the companies' catalogues and intellectual property. Sony Music Group is the only one of the four that the announcement does not describe as an existing partner. TechCrunch characterised the roster as less a typical venture lineup than a list of the companies Stability AI depends on for licensing and distribution.

Coatue co-founder Thomas Laffont has joined the board, where he sits with filmmaker James Cameron, Parker, Greycroft co-founder Dana Settle and Akkaraju. In the announcement, Laffont contrasted Stability AI's focus on creative tools with rivals building general-purpose AI.

The round followed Stable Audio 3.0, a family of open-weight music models that Stability AI says was trained on fully licensed data. The news page dates that launch to May 20, 2026 and a plugin for digital audio workstations to August 18.

By the standards of AI video this summer, $76 million is small. Higgsfield, the video and image creation platform, announced a $400 million Series B at a $5.4 billion valuation on August 17, eight days earlier. Stability AI's round is 19% of that ($76 million divided by $400 million).

Stability AI's legal position is mixed, according to TechCrunch: it largely prevailed in the copyright case Getty Images brought in the United Kingdom, while a similar Getty suit in the United States is still pending.

For video creators, the open question is whether the licensed-data approach reaches video. Stability AI's Stable Video page, as of September 19, describes a model that generates 14 or 25 frames at 3 to 30 frames per second, which is under one second of footage at the top rate (25 divided by 30 is 0.83). ByteDance's Seedance 2.5 generates up to 30 seconds in one pass. If the new money produces a competitive video model trained with rights holders' consent, it could give commercial creators a clearer account of what the model was trained on. The announcement does not promise one; it names music, gaming and entertainment, and no video product.

Stability AI has not announced a release date for the creative production suite or for any product funded by the round; Getty Images' U.S. copyright suit against the company remains pending, according to TechCrunch.
