Urvashi Rautela seeks ₹7,000 crore from Bollywood.AI

The actor Urvashi Rautela's team said on September 29 that it is pursuing legal remedies against the Los Angeles company behind Bollywood.AI and Hollywood.AI over the alleged use of her name, images and videos, with damages "currently being assessed at Rs 7,000 crore", according to Times of India. No court filing has been confirmed.

The claim was made in a post on Instagram from her team's account, not in a pleading, and the ₹7,000 crore figure is the team's own assessment rather than a sum decided by any court. The post read: "We are pursuing appropriate legal remedies, including damages currently being assessed at Rs 7,000 crore against the Los Angeles-based company." NDTV quotes the same post claiming the business generated "billions of Dollars in value by using Urvashi's name, images & videos without authorisation".

The company answering it is Bollywood.AI and Hollywood.AI, whose founder and chief executive is Sheeraz Hasan. In his own Instagram post, Hasan wrote that the claim is ridiculous, that the company did not put words in her mouth, and that she should educate herself about artificial intelligence and the future of Bollywood's entertainment business. He described AI movies, vertical dramas and "digital stars who never age, speak multiple languages, work 24/7 and have no egos" as the future of the business.

The dispute follows a viral interview in which Bollywood.AI asked Rautela about Bollywood and artificial intelligence and she answered hesitantly. Both sides are using the exchange as evidence: her team says her name and image are being used to market the company; Hasan's reply says his question was answered, not scripted.

Indian law on this is developing rather than settled. Rautela's team is asserting what the industry calls personality rights, a mix of publicity and moral rights over a person's name, likeness and voice. Times of India reports that actors including Salman Khan, Preity Zinta and Mohanlal have voiced concerns about their likenesses being used without authorisation through AI, deepfakes and voice cloning, and that the Delhi and Bombay High Courts have already granted celebrities protection against unauthorised use of their names, images and digital personas. Those orders are interim protections for named individuals, not a general rule that covers every synthetic performance.

For anyone building with these tools in India, two things follow. First, a public claim of this size is a warning shot that costs nothing to send and does not itself establish liability. Second, the products at issue are exactly the ones this beat covers: the company's pitch is AI films, vertical drama and synthetic performers, and its position is that a digital performer does not need a licence from a real one it never depicts.

The next step is a filed complaint; until one exists, this is a claim and a denial.
